A Basic Infernus Marine
Project Gallery
Summary
This tutorial shows you how to paint a basic Infernus Marine. It utilizes only the six paints that came with the base infernus marine set. We'll go over the priming, basecoating, highlighting, the scorched weapon effect, and a dusty dirt base.
The guide is designed for beginners: it uses simple, step-by-step techniques like washing, drybrushing, and edge highlighting. No extra paints or advanced tools required. Perfect for following along if working on your first model.

Tutorial
Step 1: Priming the Mini
Equipment:
Black Spray Primer
I began with a black spray primer. Black primer helps give instant shading in the recesses and makes the colors look deeper and require less layers of paint.
Step 2: Armor Basecoat
Paints:
Macragge Blue (Citadel)
Equipment:
Cheap Brush
Wet Palette
Apply two thin coats of Macragge Blue over all the armor panels. Remember to thin the paint with water. This keeps the finish smooth and even while allowing the recesses to stay dark from the primer.
Step 3: Shading the Armor
Paints:
Agrax Earthshade (Citadel)
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
I used Agrax Earthshade to wash into all the corners, joints, and recesses of the armor. This step adds instant depth.
Step 4: Black Details
Paints:
Abaddon Black (Citadel)
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
Paint the flamer and leather straps and gun with Abaddon Black.
Step 5: Flamer Heat Burn Effect
Paints:
Balthasar Gold (Citadel)
Flamer End Mix
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
I created a burnt metal transition by mixing a little Balthasar Gold with Abaddon Black.
At the muzzle, I started with the darker black-gold mix
Then I quickly painted at base of the metal flamer Balthasar Gold
While still wet, I pull with the side tip of my brush from the dark mix towards my gold.
This gives the flamer a realistic scorched look
Step 6: Gold Details
Paints:
Balthasar Gold (Citadel)
Eye Mix
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
Paint the flamer tank, chest eagle, and shoulder trim with Balthasar Gold.
Mix a little bit of Abaddon black with the Balthasar Gold and carefully color in the eyes.
Step 7: Shoulder Symbols
Paints:
Corax White (Citadel)
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
For the chapter icons on the shoulder pads, I used Corax White.
Tip: thin your paint slightly to keep the lines smooth, even if you need two coats.
Step 8: Highlights
Paints:
Highlight Mixture
Equipment:
Detail Brush (Size 0)
Wet Palette
Mix Corax White with Macragge Blue to create a highlight color. Add the highlights to the edges and on armor facing the light source (I chose top-left lighting).
Step 9: Base and Weathering
Paints:
Armageddon Dust (Citadel)
Abaddon Black (Citadel)
Agrax Earthshade (Citadel)
Equipment:
Dry Brush
Craft Stick
I spread Armageddon Dust across the base with a craft stick or something that can get in between the legs. Once dry, I washed it with Agrax Earthshade and then painted the base rim Abaddon Black to frame it.
To tie the Marine into the base and give a battle-worn look:
Drybrush Armageddon Dust very lightly onto the boots, shins, and lower edges of the armor.
You can also use a soft makeup brush or drybrush to flick it upwards from the base toward the legs for a natural splatter effect.
